A Healing Story (The Legacy of Billy Higgins)

Throughout a career that spanned over fifty years, Billy Higgins participated in much of the innovative music classified as jazz. His list of accomplishments as a performing artist and his vast discography has contributed to many of the new concepts and directions in jazz, making him a creative music icon. Billy’s rise to legendary status was augmented by his commitment to cultural enrichment in grassroots communities throughout the world. In the Leimert Park area of Los Angeles California, during the late 1980’s, Billy Higgins and poet Kamau Da’ood founded The World Stage, roughly 600 square feet of performance space where professional and aspiring artists from all disciplines can develop their talents and hone their skills. Billy’s mission was to seek out and prepare "young lions" for successful careers as jazz artists. He set-up World Stage Records to increase exposure for the new talent and recruited producer Dennis Sullivan and composer/woodwind specialist Dawan Muhammad to help manage production projects. Billy’s charisma and natural leadership encouraged and inspired more artists to participate and the World Stage soon gained a reputation worldwide for developing and attracting jazz giants, who frequently used the space to facilitate clinics and workshops. This new found popularity also drew attention to many lesser-known artists deserving of wider recognition and in 1994, gave rise to LifeForcejazz, a nonprofit collective of performing and visual artists working with supporting professionals from all fields. With entertainment and personality worship overshadowing aesthetics in modern society, the unsung legends from LifeForcejazz study Creation Science and apply it the art of music, emphasizing natural and holistic aspects of creative music. Focus is on spiritual, intellectual and therapeutic benefits rather than commercial appeal and popular trends. “We appreciate entertainment, but we are dedicated to presenting jazz as America’s National Treasure and a major source for consciousness raising and cultural enrichment. So, another record label had to be established to foster the goals and objectives of the collective” says co-founder Dawan Muhammad.

Since Billy’s passing in 2001, Dawan has maintained the operation and continued to pursue the vision of establishing a network of community-based organizations with creative music exchange programs throughout the country.  LifeForcejazz welcomes opportunities to collaborate with artists and organizations identifying with our concept.  As a result, we are pleased that new collaborations are on the rise and our Latin jazz division headed up by producers Bobby Matos and Ismael ‘East’ Carlo continues to recruit master artists and release classic CDs and DVDs.  Since Latin music and African roots are integral parts of jazz, we are looking forward to expanding audiences and further exploring the healing nature of creative music

Thanks to Dr. Eddie Henderson!

Eddie's expertise as a physician and musician is a perfect match for LifeForcejazz healing music concepts. Dr. Henderson has been a "hands-on" supporter of our organization since our inception. He opted to curtail his medical practice and focus on his music artistry, becoming one of today's most sought after trumpeters. We are proud of the fact that throughout his entire discography, some of his most creative solos can be heard on the following three LifeForcejazz CDs: 'Hereafter' (Dawan Muhammad), LifeForcejazz & Blues Compilation and 'Generation Dance' (Elmer Gibson). Email us to submit other newsworthy information or to become a member of LifeForcejazz!

Vern Thompson Series

LifeForcejazz welcomes the addition of the Vern Thompson Series to the catalog. Jazz composer and trumpet player Vern Thompson has produced three outstanding CDs featuring his original compositions. To accomplish this feat he recruited a host of great players, including Warren Gale, Bob Sheppard, Billy Childs, Tony Dumas and Akira Tana. June 19th of this year is the scheduled release date for new CDs by Calvin Keys, Elmer Gibson and Dawan Muhammad/Billy Higgins Sextet. An Evening With Calvin Keys is a superb documentation of the guitarist in live concert, featuring Tim Hauf on bass and the late Gaylord Birch on drums. Elmer Gibson Trio is also live, but in a nightclub setting with Rick Jones on bass and the legendary Ron Free on drums. Smoke Signal is in tribute to drummers Art Blakey, who passed before this recording and Billy Higgins, who co-led this recording session with Dawan Muhammad, but has since passed. James Smith, Phil Ranelin, Greg Kirstin, and Jesse Murphy join the leaders.
